What you'll learn
Children's online experiences can be productive, as well as distractive.
Are you sure your children are making the most of their time online, or have smart devices just become an easy way to manage them?
Post-lockdown, have you tried to wean children off screens? Are you met with strange reactions when trying to detach them from screens?
Has the resistance made you give up?
Do you think children understand digital better? Are you too busy to explain things so you let them figure it out with friends?
These might not be easy challenges for the generation that grew up in the pre-internet era and are now raising 100% ‘Digital Natives’ – a generation that cannot even imagine a pre-internet era.
Blanket bans are not an option; nor is absolute freedom with smart devices. Children need digital technologies to learn and develop in this age. What grown-ups can do is ensure that digital technologies are working in the child’s interest, and not vice versa. It’s not too difficult once you understand ‘why’ your children are constantly glued to their screens. Once that’s done, we share proven methods that help grown-ups meet children halfway on their online experiences, and reduce overall anxieties.
